Remember a couple of years ago those commercials for freecreditreport.com. You had the catchy jingle and it made it seem so easy to get your credit report and score. Here are all nine commercials for your viewing pleasure.
.The problem with Free Credit Report.com is that it wasn’t really free. Yes, you could get a copy of your credit report, but if you want the score you had to sign up for the service, which cost you like $14 a month or something. It was basically a scam to get you into the door and get their credit monitoring service.
Considering what most people want is their FICO (Credit) score it was a pretty good ploy.
I know a couple of people who fell for the scam and our wary of any of those services that advertise a “free” credit score.
Short Answer: No
(BTW, Credit Sesame is a similar service to Credit Karma. I don’t think there is that much difference. I personally use Credit Karma, but that is only out of convenience).
Both services and I am sure there are others other there will provide you an estimated credit score from two of the major ratings agencies for free. Just know that these scores are basically estimates there aren’t totally official. For those scores you would need to contact the ratings agencies (Experian, Transunion, and Equifax) directly.
You can also get a look at a bit of your credit report on Credit Karma or one of those other sites.
Where they make their money is in the advertising and different offers they try to get you to purchase.
However, if you want your basic credit score. I suggest signing up for a service like Credit Karma or Credit Sesame.
I have both and I am satisfied with them.
If you want a full on credit report you are allowed to obtain, by law for free, your specific credit report from one of the ratings agencies. Sometimes what they have on the Credit Karma and Credit Sesame sites doesn’t give you a full picture of your credit. You can get your credit report at Annual Credit Report.
All of us should check our credit report at the very least at least once per year to make sure there aren’t any issues.
Your credit report, even if you don’t want a credit score, can be really important to determine that there is no fraud with your identity. Identity theft is an all too common and profitable enterprise and you want to make sure you protect yourselves as soon as possible.
